Abstract

[Class 52 (v)] [See also Groups VII and XXV] In a safety appliance for the use of window-cleaners or the like comprising a clamping device having a pair of jaws adapted to grip the top rail of a window, a depending bracket is provided on one of the jaws and is bifurcated to form two limbs between which is fixed a horizontal handle to which a flexible member such as a steel rope for passing round the user's body, may be attached. As shown in Fig. 2, the clamping device comprises a jaw a, which has a padded inturned lip e at one end, and is bifurcated at the other end to form two limbs joined by a handle f, and is also formed with a boss a<2> through which is threaded a screwed spindle c carrying a second jaw b. As shown in Fig. 4, a bifurcated lever k, having a horizontal handle f, is mounted at one corner of the jaw a, and carries a ratchet bar j supporting the second jaw b. A spring- loaded pawl n, mounted on the jaw a, engages with the ratchet bar in such manner that the jaws a, b are made to grip the window frame by pushing the handle f towards the window. The device is released by pulling the pawl downwards against the spring p<1> by means of its handle s. In each case, an eye h is provided on the handle f for the attachment of the steel rope g having snaphooks at its ends for this purpose.
