Abstract

<PICT:0434886/III/1> In the drying of wet clay and like pastes of finely divided material which are substantially refractory at the drying temperature employed, by passing the material through a heating zone as a thin deposit upon a conveyer, the material is heated mainly by radiant heat from surfaces heated to incandescene. A conveyer 1 comprising a band of wire mesh is fed continuously through a deposition hopper 5 into firstly, a pre-drying zone 19 and secondly, a drying zone proper 20, the latter being heated by oil or gas fired burners 21 playing flame into the spaces between the conveyer and raising pairs of refractory surfaces 22--23, 24--25 to incandescence, and the former being heated by combustion gases produced in the main heating zone. From the heating zones, the conveyer passes through a collecting hopper 8 which receives the dried material from the conveyer, detachment from which is facilitated by flexing the band by rollers 6, 7 and by a rotary wire brush 9 and stationary wire brushes 10. The heating zones and collecting hopper are enclosed from the external atmosphere and the conveyer returns to the latter through a dust seal 13. The drying zones may be heated by electrical means. The direction of travel of the conveyer may be reversed, the pre-drying zone being lowermost in the apparatus; the heating zones may also be inclined or horizontal. The feed hopper 5 depends into a secondary hopper 60 provided with false walls 36, 39 which may be adjusted to vary the width of the outlet therefrom. The material flows from the hopper 60 into the pinch between two feed rollers 32, 33 disposed on either side of the conveyer, a pair of doctors 34, 35 preventing adherence of the material to the feed rollers. The false inclined wall 39 may be vibrated by a rocker 40 driven by a chain and sprocket 41. The material may be conveyed through two main heating zones separated by an intervening auxiliary drying zone.
