[Class 100 (ii)] [See also Group VIII] Packings, cases, boxes, &c. for enclosing articles such as bottles, eggs, lamp bulbs, fruits, cigars and cartridges, are formed by passing a continuous web of material, such as paper, fabric, cardboard, cork, plastic material, or metal, through a machine provided with rollers for impressing appropriate shapes, designs, and folds or creases upon the web, which is subsequently divided into sections. In the machine shown in Fig. 1, two webs d, d<1> are fed in opposite directions between a central roller b and upper and lower rollers c, c<1>. These rollers are detachably retained by locking-members f, and comprise a standard spindle q, Fig. 3, and a removable sleeve p with an appropriate shaping and wafering surface, and recesses r to receive removable engraved design plates. Fig. 4 shows an alternative construction with a removable sleeve p composed of rotary elements t. The webs d, d<1>, Fig. 1, are formed by superposing three paper webs from supply rolls g, g<1>, g<2> in closed containers a, a<1> supported on wheeled carriages attachable to the machine by clips j, j<1>. The central web g<1> is passed through a bath k of adhesive, such as sodium silicate, and the superposed webs pass out between rollers o, o<1>. The level of adhesive in the bath is shown by an external gauge l, and further supply can be added through a feed opening m. A moist atmosphere is maintained in the container by a water bath n, which may be heated electrically.
