433,508. Electrolytic furnaces. SIEMENS-PLANIAWERKE AKT.-GES. FUR KOHLEFABRIKATE, 128, Herzbergstrasse, Lichtenberg, Berlin. Oct. 11, 1934, No. 29183. Convention date, Oct. 24, 1933. [Class 39 (iii)] In a furnace for producing aluminium, contact surfaces are machined on the electrodes 2 during the feeding of the latter by means of a cutting edge 11 of hard metal, such as a tungsten-cobalt alloy, provided on the contact plates 3. The plates are of soft metal and are pressed against the electrodes by crossbars 4 suspended on members 6 carried by a horizontally movable frame 7 supported on pivoted links 10. The electrodes may be forced downwards by hand wheels 8. The frame 7 is oscillated periodically by hand, by means of the hand wheel 9, or continuously by an electric drive.
