Abstract

433,017. Slabs for floors or walls. UNITED LIMMER & VORWOHLE ROCK ASPHALTE CO., Ltd., 105, Salisbury House, Finsbury Circus, London.-(Assignees of Lattorf, R., 61, Lattorfstrasse, Ahlem, near Hanover, Germany) Nov. 9, 1934, Nos. 32329 and 32330. Convention dates, April 13 and Oct. 12. [Class 87 (i)] A slab for paving or other building purposes and having sound and heat insulating properties is provided with an upper or wearing surface of artificial stone, formed of granular natural stone of rough texture with a matrix such as Portland cement mortar, united with an underlayer of asphalt with or without other ingredients. One method of forming the slab is by spreading a layer, about ¥in. thick, of moderately heated asphalt powder in the bottom of a mould, adding a layer, about lin. to 1¢in. thick, of the artificial stone mass made with the minimum content of water, and immediately exerting on the two layers a pressure of seven to eight and a half thousand pounds per square inch. Cast mastic asphalt may be substituted for the powdered asphalt. In an alternative method dispensing with pressure other than manual tamping, hot mastic asphalt, preferably with the addition of small pieces of cork, asbestos, pumice, wood peat, or similar fibrous materials, is poured into a mould to a depth about ¥in. and its surface sprinkled with dry grit. After the asphalt has been cooled (either by air or water), a layer, about ¥in. to 1¢in. thick, of the artificial stone mass is applied in a liquid consistency like that of plaster. The slabs may be tessellated, or coloured, or provided with a separate coating layer, and the under surface of the asphalt layer may be roughened for laying in mortar in the usual manner.
