Abstract
432,988. Recording sound and the like. PHILIPS-MILLER NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP, Emmasingel, Eindhoven, Holland. Feb. 28, 1934, No. 6501. Convention date, March 1, 1933. [Class 40 (ii)] Sound or other vibrations are recorded on a carrier such as a film or disc by a recording member whose zero or mean position (that is, the position of the recording member relatively to the carrier when no oscillations are being recorded) is altered in steps either automatically or manually in accordance with two or more predetermined ranges in the intensity of the vibrations to be recorded. The recording may be effected mechanically or optically. The carrier may consist of a supporting layer 1, Fig. 2, of celluloid, a recording layer 2 of gelatine and an opaque coating layer 3 and recording may be effected by a chisel M which vibrates vertically about two or more mean positions according to the intensity of the sound, the change from one mean position to another not being effected continuously, but in steps producing record sequences of width shown at P and Q, Fig. 1. In the case in which the recording member takes up two mean positions, the change from one mean position to the other is effected when the intensity of the sound is about three-quarters of the maximum. For effecting the change of mean position, the recording member M, Fig. 5, may have its armature H mounted on an arm R which is pivoted at X and is urged against a stop I by a spring D. When the sound exceeds a given intensity, current from the output of the amplifier V, amplified if necessary by an amplifier V1 closes a contact Ko and completes a direct current circuit having a source Br, this current actuating a relay S and causing a rod T to be forced downwards against the resistance of the spring D so that the arm R rests against the stop I1. The coating layer may be applied to the carrier after recording has been effected, as described in Specification 404,948. The recording member may produce a track which is modulated on one or on both edges.
