Abstract

432,847. Wire-straining appliances. ERICSSON, E. A. J., 8, Andra Langgattan, Gothenburg, Sweden. Jan. 16, 1935, No. 1468. [Class 45] [See also Group VI] An appliance for tightening a wire about an object, particularly about plates applied to a fractured bone, comprises a screw 4 rotatable in the casing 1 of the appliance and carrying a nut 19 which is traversable by the screw in a slot 2 in the casing. The nut 19 carries clamping means for the ends of the wire 25 comprising a plate 20 integral with an abutment plate 21 which co-operates with a saw-edged eccentric 23 operated by a lever 24. The upper end of the casing 1 has spigotted to it at 7 a tip 8 carrying an eye 9 offset from the axis of the screw and aligned with the clamp 21, 23, a pin on the part 7 engaging a slot in the casing. The eye has a loose sleeve with terminal flanges 12, 13, the flange 12 having radial slots. The casing 1 carries a T-shaped wire-separator member 18. A number of tips 8 are provided for alternative use according to the size of wire employed. In use the wire 25 is placed around the object 26, the ends are then passed through the eye 9, separated on the T-piece 18, and clamped in the clamp 21, 23. Turning the screw 4 by a handle 5 then traverses the nut 19 and tightens the wire, after which the whole appliance is rotated to twist the wire and finally to break it above the T-piece, the radial slots in the flange 12, and rotation of the sleeve carrying it, preventing premature breakage.
