Abstract

The resistance to creasing of textile materials is improved by treatment with an aqueous solution containing a "highly polymeric compound" and an aldehyde and subsequent heating to a temperature of 70--150 DEG C. The term "highly polymeric compound" is defined as referring to a product obtainable by polymerization of a mono- or polyhydric alcohol or a derivative thereof or by the condensation of such a polymeric product with another organic compound. Suitable compounds are polyvinyl alcohol, polyglycerin and their esters and ethers, and mixed products, e.g. from vinyl butyl ether and acrylic acid, vinyl acetate and maleic acid, acrylic acid methyl ester and vinyl acetate, styrol and maleic acid. Suitable aldehydes are formaldehyde and its polymers and polyvalent aldehydes such as glyoxal. Examples describe the treatment of textiles with products from (1) polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde; (2) polyglycerin and acetaldehyde; (3) a polyether (hydroxyethylated polyvinyl alcohol) and paraformaldehyde; (4) a fatty acid ester of polyvinyl alcohol and formaldehyde; (5) the ammonium salt of a mixed polymerization product from vinyl butyl ether and maleic acid and paraformaldehyde; (6) the ammonium salt of a mixed polymerization product from styrol and maleic acid and glyoxal; (7) an alkali salt of the mixed product from acrylic acid methyl ester and vinyl acetate; (8) the ammonium salt of the polymerization product from mixed vinyl acetate and maleic anhydride and formaldehyde.
