Abstract
431,632. Glass manufacture. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP HOLLANDSCHE MAATSCHAPPIJ VOOR DE VERVAARDIGING VAN GLAS, 104, WeterW gschans, Amsterdam.-(Assignees of Watt, J. A. ; 714, East High Street, Mt. Vernon, Ohio, U.S.A.) Feb. 14, 1935, No. 4836. Convention date, June 15, 1934. [Class 56] Relates to apparatus for drawing sheet glass by the Slingluff process in which a sheet 4 is drawn vertically upwards from a bath 1 of molten glass, a draw bar 3 being submerged in the glass below the line of draw. According to the present invention, a metal shield or curtain is arranged near each edge of the sheet 4, in the space between the glass 1 and the leer 5, in order to obtain a more uniform distribution of temperature across the width of the sheet. The shields or curtains are preferably made up of a series of lengths of chains 16 suspended from rods 17 and having their lower ends close to the glass 1 or to the flanges of the blocks 8 between which the sheet 4 is drawn. Metal bars may be used instead of the chains 16, or the screens may be made of sheet metal or of metal gauze or netting. The shields may be provided also with inspection windows made of heat-resisting glass. In use, the chains become highly heated and thus raise the temperature of the air about the edges of the sheet.
