Abstract

431,669. Glass manufacture. AMERICAN WINDOW GLASS CO., Farmers Bank Building, 5th Avenue, Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Bishop, F. L.) Nov. 9, 1934, No. 32309. Convention date, Sept. 8. [Class 56] Relates to the method of making sheet glass by drawing a sheet continuously upwards from a bath of molten glass. The invention consists in providing means for causing the air or other gas which is in contact with the rising sheet, particularly with its lower portion, to circulate transversely in order to obtain more uniform annealing. The Figure shows a Fourcault type of apparatus in which a sheet S is drawn from a bath of glass B through a debiteuse 5 situated in a drawing pit 6, the sheet being passed through a leer 8 situated above the pit. The required circulation of the gas may be effected by means of blower nozzles 17, 18 which are placed at the sides of the pit and direct air blasts transversely to the length of the glass sheet. The circulation of air may take place either in the pit or in the lower part of the leer so long as it takes place adjacent to that part of the glass where the temperature is within or above the annealing range. Specification 431,668 is referred to.
