Abstract

430,825. Power hammers. TOWLER, J. M., Wells House, Thruscross, Summerbridge, Harrogate, Yorkshire. Dec. 23, 1933, Nos. 36202/33 and 9187/34. [Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group XXVI] In hammers having two or more tups or masses arranged to strike the work simultaneously, automatic correlation of the masses is effected by applying to either mass a compensating force which acts independently of the operative force serving to reciprocate the masses. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the tups 1, 2 are operated by pistons, 7, 8 against the resistance of springs 11, 12. The springs function to effect correlation the more quickly moving tup being retarded. The correlation of tups of unequal weight is effected-by suitably selected springs. Pistons associated with separate, closed reservoirs of compressible fluid may be used in place of springs. The tups may be arranged vertically, the springs being adapted to compensate for the tup weights. In a modification, fluid pressure is constantly supplied to the inner ends of the pistons, and buffers acted upon by spring, pneumatic or hydraulic pressure are engaged when the pistons overrun. their stroke. In a further modification, the buffers are at the outer ends of the cylinders, and the power cylinders are operated by fluid controlled by a common piston valve operated by a spring-pressed crosshead engaged by inclined ramps in both tups. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, the power pistons 42 are connected to control pistons 44 to the ends of which fluid pressure is constantly supplied through non-return valves, and the ends of which are connected by branches to valve chambers 46 containing valves operated by bell-cranks 47, links 48 and an oscillatable member 49 connected to slides 51 operated by the tups 40. The branches are connected together or led to a common supply tank. Want of balance in the piston movements affects the valves 46, which throttle or release the pressure in the ends of the cylinders 45 to restore the tups to their correct relative positions. The functions of the cylinders 45 may be combined with those of the cylinders 43 and the cylinders 45 dispensed with. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, the cylinder 57 and anvil are made in one and are carried by levers 65 and 59. The lever 59 is carried by a piston 61 mounted in a cylinder subject to fluid-pressure at the bottom and connected to a piston 68 in an auxiliary cylinder 69. The valve 70 is connected to a bell-crank mounted upon the cylinder and is also operated by a slide 71 acted upon by the tup 55. The movements made by the piston and cylinder upon the distribution of power fluid are proportional to their mass. The correlation of the movements is effected by the piston 68. The second Provisional Specification describes hammers with spring-controlled tups and anvils moving vertically, and refers to Specification 411,882, [Group XXIX]. The first Provisional Specification describes a vertical hammer with a movable frame controlled by pistons and cylinders and supported by links and bell-cranks, or one of more pistoncontrolled links.
