Abstract

Highly porous ceramic objects are produced by moulding a mixture of clay, fine sand and a finely divided combustible material, in the absence of fluxing materials, pricking the surface of the objects and baking at a fairly low temperature. The objects may be hollow spheres of 2 to 6 ins. diameter, the interior of which contains a pad or sponge impregnated with perfume, deodorizer, insecticide, disinfectant and the like, or rounded lumps of about 1/2 in. diameter for use as pipe plugs. The pipe plugs may be pricked so that there are one or more passages extending completely therethrough and a pin may be incorporated to hold them more firmly in the pipe. An example of a mixture is 3 parts of marl clay, 1 part of sand and 2 parts of sawdust, both the latter passing a 100 mesh sieve. The moulded objects are then fired at 500 to 600 DEG C. For pipe plugs Cherrywood sawdust is preferably used as the combustible material.ALSO:Highly porous ceramic objects are produced by moulding a mixture of clay, fine sand, and a finely divided combustible material, in the absence of fluxing materials, pricking the surface of the objects and baking at a fairly low temperature.
