[Class 41] An electrode 1 comprising a parallel set of interconnected vertical plates or ribs is used in conjunction with a plane electrode 2 of opposite polarity. The plane electrode may consist of one or more perforated or imperforate plates or of woven metallic gauze mounted between perforated plates. Diaphragms 3 may be arranged round one or both sets of electrodes. One set of electrodes may be connected to the container, and the other to rods passing through the cover.
