[Class 83 (i)] [See also Groups V and XIII] A method of producing sand or other granular material of a known water or other liquid content, e.g. for use in the preparation of concrete or mortar, and in foundry moulding consists in flooding the material with liquid in a porous container, allowing it to drain with or without mechanical disturbance, and subsequently adding a known quantity of liquid. The invention is based on the experimental fact that when sand is flooded in a porous vessel and allowed to drain, the amount of water after a certain time reaches a value which is approximately constant for any given kind of sand. This value can be altered by subjecting the vessel to mechanical disturbance. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the invention comprises, as shown, a container 1, having a perforated bottom 6, supported on a plate 4 which is mounted between springs 13, 14 on four vertical rods 10 so that it can move up and down. Mounted on bearings on the underside of the plate is a shaft 20 on which are two discs 21 provided with unbalanced weights 22. The shaft is driven by suitable power through a flexible coupling 23. The amplitude of the vibration can be adjusted by angularly adjusting one of the discs. A suitable spraying device 24 is arranged above the container.
