Abstract
428,631. Plate heat - exchangers. SELIGMAN, R., 51, Parkside, Wimbledon, London, CROSBY, W. E., 4, Revell Road, Coombe Hill, Kingston, Surrey, and GOODMAN, H. F., 1, Bracken Gardens, Barnes, London. Dec. 9, 1933, No. 34667. [Class 64 (iii)] A plate heat-exchanger for use, e.g. in pasteurizing milk and beer, is provided with clamping means comprising a fixed endplate 2 and a movable end-plate 7 secured to piston rods 6 the pistons of which are reciprocated either to release or secure the plates by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure. The supply of fluid to either end of each of the cylinders is controlled by a valve 32 connected to pumps 30. The plates are mounted on guide-rods 15, 20 secured to the movable plate and provided with locking-wheels 17, 21. To permit the expansion of the plates, a spring- pressed plate 34 is interposed between the end heat-exchange plate and the movable plate. In a modification, a diaphragm 42, Fig. 3, forming a wall of a fluid chamber 43 is provided between the plates 7 and 34. In another arrangement, an inflatable bag is substituted for the chamber 43. In a further modification, a fixed centre plate is arranged with groups of heat-exchange plates and corresponding movable plates on either side thereof.
