Abstract
The reactivation of adsorbents, such as active carbon or silica gel, which have been used for removing hydrocarbons, e.g. benzol, from gases is modified by using coal gas, town's gas or similar industrial gas instead of pure hydrogen in the destructive hydrogenation of the fouled adsorbent. Preferably, the gas used for the destructive hydrogenation has been purified from sulphur and freed from benzol. As catalysts, any of those described in the parent Specification may be employed, e.g. active carbon is treated with an aqueous solution of ammonium vanadate and used for the removal of benzol until exhausted, after which the fouled carbon is subjected to the action of a stream of town's gas at 200 atmospheres and 440 to 450 DEG C. The products of destructive hydrogenation are removed by condensation after the release of pressure from the gas.
