427,696. Squirting. GENERAL CABLE CORPORATION, 420, Lexington Avenue, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Atkinson, R. W. ; 389, Kearney Avenue, Perth Amboy, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Aug. 20, 1934, No. 23953. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1933. [Class 83 (iv)] A sealing means at the head of the cylinder of an extrusion press comprises a stuffing box surrounding the ram and embodying a sealing member and a chamber between the seal and the upper end of the cylinder. The ram comprises a main portion 26 engaged in an air-tight manner by the packing-ring 47 of a stuffing-box 38, and an enlarged head 26a engaging within the press cylinder 28. Molten metal is introduced through a pipe 33 from the valve-controlled outlet of a melting-chamber. Packing 43 is provided at all the joints, and a tube is provided through the stuffing box for evacuation or for conveying thereto steam or an inert liquid. The charging operation may be observed through glass inspection windows. Metal escaping on to the portion 26 of the ram is scraped off by the edge 50, and is remelted at intervals by an electric heater within the box. Specification 427,697 is referred to.
