Abstract

A material of pearly, silky, metallic, nacreous, or iridescent appearance is obtained by transforming a solution of cellulose or a cellulose derivative into a lather, applying it to a pliable or rigid article by coating, printing or impregnating and then solidifying by precipitation or coagulation with or without subsequent desiccation or by desiccation alone, without materially destroying the structure imparted to the material in making the lather. The lather may be used for the production of films, or for coating, or impregnating textiles. The structure of the lather is preserved by preventing its surface from coming into contact with rollers or other appliances that exert pressure on the surface of the lather and the devices for shaping it, applying it to a rigid or pliable support, or supporting it during coagulation or drying should not exert any pressure on or otherwise disturb it. Solutions which may be converted into lather are those of cellulose in cuprammonia, zinc chloride, caustic alkali with guanidine, urea, or thiourea, or thiocyanate solution, or a similar solution of a conversion product of cellulose, or an alkyl ether of cellulose, or a cellulose ester, cellulose thiourethane, cellulose xanthate, or other cellulose derivative containing a CSS-group. Cellulose ethers which are soluble in caustic alkali, but insoluble in water, and cellulose ethers which dissolve or swell in cold water are particularly suitable. The solution of cellulose or cellulose derivative may be transformed into a lather by violet agitation or beating or by blowing into or through the solution a very violent current of air or other gas. Saponins, proteins, peptones, or albumoses, or similar substances may be added to facilitate the formation of lather. If desired, fish scale essence, mica, bronze, mercurous chloride, bismuth oxychloride, antimony oxychloride, or similar substance may be incorporated in the lather to enhance the decorative effect. Dyes, or pigments may also be added. p Specifications 335,906, 335,993, 335,994, [all in Class 2 (ii)], 341,843, 341,930, 357,121, 357,154, 357,167, 357,526, 357,527, 357,595, 368,288, 385,979, 390,517, 390,518 and 390,519 are referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to the production of lathers from other carbohydrates such as starch or esters or ethers of starch, and to the production of artificial threads, plastics, adhesives, cements, thickening or pigment fixing agents in textile printing, floor coverings, artificial leather, coatings on wood, glass, ceramics, plastics, textiles, paper and leather.
