[Class 55 (ii)] In apparatus for bringing gases or vapours into contact with liquids, e.g. in distillation comprising a column 1 in which liquid flows from higher to lower trays 4, 5 with means such as pipes 11 and bubble hoods 6 to pass the vapour through the liquid, and wherein the bottom of each tray slopes from the place of liquid entry 2 to the liquid outlet 3, each tray consists of elements 4<a>-4<d> joined so that no vapour can pass between them, and a liquid overflow member 9 is provided between successive elements, the bottom of each element being lower than that of the previous adjacent element.
