Abstract

The reaction between acetylene and acetic acid with formation of ethylidene diacetate and vinyl acetate is promoted by the presence of a mercury salt of methionic acid or other organic disulphonic acid, other than aldehyde disulphonic acids, and free methionic or other organic disulphonic acid present in excess. At temperatures of 60--100 DEG C. ethylidene diacetate is the main product, while temperatures of 30--45 DEG C. are employed for the preparation of vinyl acetate. According to examples, acetylene is passed into acetic acid in presence of mercuric oxide and excess of methionic acid at 70--80 DEG C. to give mainly ethylidene diacetate, at 35--40 DEG C. to give mainly vinyl acetate, and in presence of mercuric oxide and excess of benzene disulphonic acid, naphthalene disulphonic acid, cresol disulphonic acid, or benzoic acid disulphonic acid, at 80--100 DEG C. to give mainly ethylidene diacetate. Resin formation is minimized. British Specifications 14246/13, 112,765, 112,766, and 308,169, [all in Class 2 (iii)], and German Specifications 271,381 and 334,554 are referred to.
