Abstract

426,930. Centrifugal-action lubricating. ARMSTRONG, J. J. V., 12, Church Street, Liverpool.-(Union Special Machine Co. ; 400, North Franklin Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) Dec. 4, 1934, No. 34789. [Class 12 (iii)] An overhead sewing-machine of the scale pan type has a closed housing with an oil sump lying below the main driving shaft which has a disc dipping into the oil for spraying it over the whole of the mechanisms within the housing. The feed cup shafts, looper, spreader and needle bar work in sleeves projecting through the housing. The machine has a standard 1 and overhanging part 2 enclosing mechanism driven from a main shaft 16. The shaft 16 is mounted in bearings 17 secured to the housing, and any oil which works through the bearing is caught by grooves 52 on the pulley and whirled into a groove 49 in the bearing from which it drains back into the sump through a channel 20. A disc 48 on the shaft 16 dips into oil in a sump formed by a partition 21 and spreads it by centrifugal force over the whole of the mechanism. A looper bar 28 which is reciprocated and oscillated, a spreader bar 45 which is oscillated, and a needle bar 22 which is reciprocated work in sleeves 29, 44, 25 respectively, these sleeves having oil traps such as 26a with drain channels back to the sump. The bar 28 is oscillated by a link connected to an arm 30 on a sleeve 31 oscillating upon a bushing 33 on a fixed shaft 32 secured to the casing by end screws 36 bearing on sealing washers 37. Oil holes 34 are formed in the sleeve and bushing. The feed cup spindles work in sleeves 4, 6 projecting through the overhanging portion of the casing.
