[Classes 12 (ii) and 12 (iii).] The stitch-forming mechanism of a sewing-machine comprises a rotary shaft 12 having a spirallygrooved portion 27 extending into a lubricant well 35 in the frame and embraced by a shaft casing 29 from the interior of which oil is supplied through a lubricant conduit to bearings in the machine upon rotation of the shaft 12. The feed of oil up the shaft 12 is limited by a gland 33 screwed into the casing 29. The shaft 12 is journalled in bearings 13, 14 carried by lugs in the standard 2 and is connected by bevel gearing 10, 11 and 16, 17 to a shaft 5 actuating the needle bar 8 and to the loop-taker actuating shaft 18. The casing 29 is provided with an annular recess 42 below the gland 33 and from this a pipe 39 leads to a lubricant reservoir 41 in the bracket arm 3. Pipes 46 conduct oil from this reservoir to the eccentrics of the pitmen 25, 26 actuating respectively the feed and feed-lift rock shafts 23, 24. Further pipes 47, 48 lead to the bearings of the shaft 5 and pipe 49 leads to an auxiliary reservoir 50, Fig. 5, having a central longitudinal passage 54 and four vertical branch passages 56 controlled by screwoperated needle valves 57. Pipes 63 .. 66 are connected laterally to the needle valve casings by nipples. These pipes lead to various bearings beneath the cloth plate 1. The lubricant well 35 is screwed into a pan 37 secured under the cloth plate and draining oil back into the well 35. The casing 29 is secured by a bracket to the cloth plate and carries at its lower end a screen 34. The casing 29 has a counter bore at its lower end to provide a lubricant entrance space. The reservoir 41 has in addition to a cover plate 44, an integrally formed lip 45 which prevents the escape of oil when the machine is tilted. A pipe 51 leading from the reservoir 41 and passing through the bracket of the casing 29 drains excess oil back to the well 35.
