Abstract

Vulcanization of rubber mixes containing sulphur and an accelerator is retarded in the initial stages by the addition to the mix of an aromatic ketone. Preferably, the ketone possesses the structure <FORM:0426649/V/1> where R is aromatic, and R1 is alkyl or aryl, substituents, if any, being alkyl, or groups containing only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Specified ketones are: acetophenone, benzophenone, o-benzoyl benzoic acid, o-tolyl phenyl ketone, and p-ditolyl ketone. Examples are given showing the retarding effect when thiazole accelerators, e.g. those described in Specification 366,554, are employed. Specification 413,282 also is referred to.
