[Class 100 (ii)] An addressing-machine of the kind employing stencils or the equivalent, e.g. embossed printing-plates, comprises a relatively resilient runway along which the stencils are moved in succession, a printing pad or roller and a coacting platen positioned intermediate the ends of the runway, and means for laterally distorting the runway so as to alter the relative positions of the stencil in printing position and the pad or roller whereby a selected portion only of the matter on the stencil may be printed. Stencils 18 are fed from a hopper 12 and along a runway consisting of a pair of grooved rails 16 each pivoted at its ends by pins 20 to a bed 10, printing being effected by an inked roller 40 which is carried by a rocking arm and coacts with a platen 52 raised and lowered by an oscillating cam 58. The rails 16 are tied together near the printing position by a metal strip 22 rigid with a saddle 24 movable laterally so as to bend the runway by turning a nut 32 on a fixed screw 26; alternatively, the screw may be rotatable and the nut fixed. The amount of deflection is indicated on a scale 38 by a pointer on the saddle. A number of interchangeable rollers 40 and platen pads 53 of widths corresponding to the number of lines to be printed may be provided.
