A registering device for use in the imposition or lay-out of a forme for a printing press comprises a substantially rectangular frame across which is adapted to travel a carriage having detachably secured thereto one end of a pliant transparent film whereby the printing plates and type in the forme may be aligned to marks on the film, the film being easily removable from the carriage. The apparatus comprises a table 1 to which is hinged a metal frame 10 having three sides 3, 4, 5 of channel section and a rod 6 between the members 3 and 5. The table is provided with a datum line 25 and a locating plate 7 for a lay-out board 8 having lugs 9 adapted to engage the plate 7, and a datum line 12 so that paper may be positioned accurately on the board. Clips 11 serve to hold the paper in position. Adjustably mounted on the frame 10 by means of chains 19, 20 running over sprockets 21, 22 are upright members 15, 16 which support a carriage 14. Adjustment is effected by a handle 24 on a rod 23 on which are mounted the sprockets 21, 22. The carriage 14 includes a straight edge bar 26 having gradations 27, 28 marked thereon and a cursor 29 having a V-shaped slot 30 for locating a marking instrument. The side 3 is likewise provided with gradations and a cursor 34 attached to the side plate 15. The straight edge bar 26 is normally in a raised position, but may be lowered into operative position by rotation of a sleeve 36 about a bar 37 secured at its ends to the plate 15, 16. Rotation of sleeve 36 depresses levers 39 which in turn depress, against the action of springs 41, rods 40 attached to the straight edge bar 26. Attached to pins 45 is a flexible transparent sheet 46, the other end of which is led over a tensioning roller 47 on the carriage 14 to a spring-loaded roller 48, also mounted on the carriage 14, the spring loading being such that the roller 48 winds up the sheet 46 as the carriage 14 is moved rearwardly. In the preparation of a lay-out the board 8 is positioned in the frame 10 and a sheet of paper secured to the board. By means of the bar 26 measurements may be drawn on the film 46, a copy being obtained on the paper sheet by using carbon paper. The lay-out board is then removed and a chase located on the table 1, the positioning of the plates and type within the chase being checked against the measurements on the film 46. For multi-colour registration a print is taken on the film 46 from a key forme and the colour plates subsequently registered against the print. annular member being caused to turn relative to said driving element in the direction of its normal rotation upon downward movement thereof along said driving element with said separating means, whereby the timing of said separating means is advanced as the latter descends and in accordance with the change in vertical position thereof with respect to the top of said pile.
