An additional retaining member for the handle consists of a spring-pressed crosspiece in a slot in the spindle adapted to engage a recessed flanged sleeve 48 in the lock-rail this cross-piece being disengaged by a pressstud 43 projecting through the handle boss. The sliding sash has an H-section rail to engage the edge of the pivoted sash when closed and is guided at the forward edge by a member 10 secured to a continuation of the rail 6 by a plate 9.
