Abstract

425,148. Roads. JONES, F. W. VALLE-, South House, Southmill Road, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. June 4, 1934, No. 16574. [Class 107] A road is re-surfaced by applying to the old surface, and in the following sequence, a thin coating 4 of an emulsion of tar, bitumen, or bitumen and tar, a layer of small stone chippings 5, a hot dressing 6 of tar or bituminous composition, and a wearing course 7 of coarser chippings of hard stone or the like. The surface is then rolled before the hot dressing has set. In the construction shown, the new surface is applied to an asphalt carpet 3 of a concrete foundation 2. The emulsion, which is in the neighbourhood of 1 /50in. in thickness, may be applied by spraying, brushing, or squeegeeing. The hot dressing is applied at temperatures ranging between 180 and 240‹ F. and is approximately 1/25in. in thickness. The chippings are of granite, those of the lower layer varying in size from “in. to #in. while those of the wearing course range between #in. to #in.
