Abstract

424,928. Controlling variable-speed gearing. FLEISCHEL, G., Bleneau, Yonne, France. May 10, 1934, No. 14211. Convention date, May 11, 1933. [Class 80 (ii)] An isolating claw clutch b<1>, b<2>, Fig. 1, between variable-speed gearing o and a propeller sleeve a<2> say of a vehicle is synchronized by friction clutch cones c<1>, c<2> one of which, c<1>, slides axially relatively to its claw member b<1>, and between a sleeve f of the cone c<1> and the member b<1> there is provided, instead of a spring, as usual, means h for producing friction. As the slidable claw member b <1> is slid right on its shaft a<1> towards the position of engagement, the cone c<1> engages the cone c<2> and the friction means h holds the member b<1> against continued axial motion until the cones have brought about synchronism of the clutch claws. In Fig. 3, the friction means is shown as a coned ring h<3> of friction material tightened against the sleeve f by a screwing cone h<4>. In Fig. 4 an arrangement is shown in which the friction means is in the form of centrifugal blocks h<5> with springs h<6> assisting the radial thrust. The clutch b<1>, b<2> is engaged by a spring d<1>, Fig. 1, and is disengaged along with a main clutch q when a pedal p is depressed. When the pedal p is allowed to rise to connect the drive after a change of speed has been effected by, say, a lever o<1>, its rise is arrested by a stop s while the clutch b<1>, b<2> is being synchronized. On completion of the engagement of the clutch b<1>, b<2>, the stop s is lifted clear through a link l, and the pedal p is freed to rise farther to let in the main clutch. In a modified form of clutch shown in Fig. 10, it is the rear member b<2> that is axially moved. There is friction material at h between the member b<2> and the sleeve f. A projection and slot connection b<a> allows limited angular displacement of the sleeve f which carries the cone c<2>, and an apertured partition e obstructs the passage of the clutch claws g<2> of the member b<2> unless synchronism has been effected. This sleeve f is screwed and its relative turning slides a nut l<1> which is connected through a link n to a control of the engine throttle superposed on the accelerator control so that the engine itself is timed automatically to facilitate the engagement of the positive clutch without shock. Specifications 356,139, 406,884, 408,599, and 420,620 are referred to.
