Abstract

424,777. Spray - producers ; valves. DE VILBISS CO., Toledo, Ohio, U.S.A. Aug. 26, 1933, No. 23787. Convention date, Sept. 6, 1932. [Classes 69 (iii) and 135] The closing pressure on the handoperated materialcontrol valve of a spray-gun is partially counteracted by pneumatic means when the valve is open. In the form shown the nozzle member B has a shank which is caused by a tubular screw 6 to seat firmly within a bore in a boss 2 depending from the body part A of the gun. The stem 8 of the material control valve 7 terminates in an enlarged portion 12, which is engaged by a dog 11 pivoted to the trigger 9. A detachable unit C for providing the closing pressure for the valve 7 comprises a cylinder 19 containing a piston 24 with a hollow stem 22, which is pressed against the valve stem 8 by a spring 31. A second stem 35 extending through the hollow stem 22 and piston 24 is pressed against the valve stem 8 by a second spring 37, which is considerably weaker than the spring 31. When the trigger 9 is operated the valve 45 is first opened and compressed air from the conduit 40 is admitted through apertures 20 into the cylinder 19, where its pressure on the piston 24 counteracts the pressure of the spring 31, and from thence it passes via hollow screw 6 to the air nozzle. Immediately thereafter the trigger 9 withdraws the valve 7 against the closing pressure of the spring 37 only. In a modification the closing pressure is provided by one spring and the air pressure is used to relieve only a portion of the tension of the spring.
