Description

May 18, 1954 E. H. GREWE ET AL BLOWGUN Filed May 28, 1952 ATTORNEYS Patented May 18,1954
BLOWGUN Edward H. Grewe and Otto C. Schilling, Milwaukee, Wis.
Application May 28, 1952, Serial No. 290,596 2 Claims. (01. 299-450) This invention appertains to a novel blow gun for delivering fluid under pressure to a desired point for cleaning castings, machine parts and the'like.
One of the primary objects of the invention is to provide a blow gun embodying a casing for connection at its inner end with a hose or conduit for compressed air and having a stationary nozzle at its opposite end for delivering the air to a desired point, with a valve independent of the nozzle and completely housed within the casing for controlling the flow of air through the casing and to the nozzle, so arranged that the valve can be readily actuated by a thumb piece extending along the casing,
Another salient object of the invention is the provisionof means for arranging the valve 1ongitudinally in the casing parallel with, but separate from, the nozzle, whereby the nozzle, in case of emergency, can be replaced without disturbing the valve and whereby the valve can be replaced when worn without disturbing the nozzle.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a blow gun embodying a casing having a valve seat therein at one side of the passage leading to the nozzle, with a valve body for said seat having a longitudinally extending valve stem projecting beyond the forward end of the casing at one side or the nozzle and carrying a replaceable wear head and stop, with a lever pivoted to the casing and extending along side of the casing and straddling the nozzle engaging the wear and stop head, so that the valve can be readily actuated from the lever.
A still further important object of the invention is the provision of a blow gun of the above character which is so designed as to reduce the leakage of air to a minimum and one which can be manufactured and maintained in working condition at a minimum cost.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the air gun;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view through the blow gun;
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the blow gun taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows and illustrating more particularly the arrangement of the operating lever or thumb piece; and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view through the gun taken on the line 4-5 of Figure 2 looking in the direction of the arrows, illustrating the arrangement of the air passage way for the nozzle and the control passage way.
Referring to the drawingsin detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter 13 generally indicates the blow gun and the same includes a casing 5 having a body portion 8. This body portion 6 can be formed in the nature of a casting and the same is threaded into a shell I. This shell i can be of a polygonal shape to facilitate the turning thereof. The rear end of the shell is interiorly threaded as at 8 or otherwise iormed to receive a coupling for a hose or other conduit for compressed air. The body portion 8 terminates short or" the rear end of the shell 1' to provide an interior chamber 9. The body 8 at one side of its longitudinal axis is provided with a longitudinally extending passage way It] and this passage way opens out through the forward end of the body portion 6 and terminates short of the rear end of the body portion as is best shown in Figure 2. The forward end of the wall of the passage way It is preferably interiorly threaded for the reception of an elongated discharge nozzle H. The body 6 is also provided with a passage way [2 which opens out through the rear end of said body portion and into the chamber 9. The wall of the passage way l2, at its rear end, can be ground to provide a valve seat l3 and it is to be noted that the passage way i2 is at one side of the passage way it and that the passage ways It and I 2 have communication forwardly of the valve seat :3 by a port It.
Slidably mounted in the body portion 6, is a valve stem [5 and the body portion is provided with a bore it for receiving the stern and the sliding fit between the stem and the wall of the bore is such that a minimum of leakage of air wil1 take place around the stem. The inner end of the stem it has detachably fitted thereon, a valve body I! for snugly fitting on the seat l3 to normally prevent the flow of compressed air from the chamber 9 into the passage Way l2. Upon wear, the valve body I! can be easily replaced.
The forward end of the stem 15 projects beyond the forward end of the body portion 6 and has detachably fitted thereon, a wear and stop head I3. Normally, air pressure within the chamber 9 holds the valve body I! on its seat and the wear and stop head forwardly of the front face or the body portion 6. Upon inward movement of the valve stem 15, the wear and stop head will engage the forward face of the body portion 6 to act as a stop and a further seal for the bore I6 and the valve body I! will be moved off of its seat for permitting the free flow of air into the passage way |2 and thence into th passage way I3 to the nozzle Means are provided for insuring the easy and quick actuation of the valve stem l5 and this means includes an angular shaped lever |9 having a rearwardly extending finger or thumb actuating portion 20 which extends along side of the body portion 6 and the shell 1. The lever also includes a front portion 2| which extends across the front of the body portion 6 and this front portion 2| is provided with an opening 22 which receives the nozzle H and so that the lever can have free movement relative to the nozzle. The extreme outer end of the front portion 2| is pivoted as at 23 to a forwardly projecting ear or lu 24 which can be welded or otherwise fastened to or formed on the body portion 6. This front portion 2| of the lever l9 engages the wear and stop head l8 as can be seen by referring to Figures 1 and 2.
In use of the improved gun and with the gun connected to a hose, the gun is taken in the hand of an operator with the nozzle directed toward the point to be cleaned and the thumb or other finger of the operator is used to depress and move the thumb and finger portion 2|! toward the casing, rocking the lever it on its pivot 23 and forcing the valve stem inwardly. This permits the free flow of air through the casing and nozzle and upon release of pressure on the thumb or finger piece 20, the valve body I! will be instantly moved on its seat again by air pressure.
From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an exceedingly simple and durable air gun has been provided, in which the leakage of air is reduced to a minimum and in which all parts can be quickly replaced in case of wear.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or the scope of this invention, but what is claimed as new is:
l. A blow gun comprising a casing having an interior compressed air receiving chamber and a longitudinally extending passage way opening out through the forward end of the casing and completely closed to the chamber and terminating short of the chamber, a nozzle carried by the forward end of the casing and communicating with the forward end of the passage way, said casing also having an interior passage way the axis of which is disposed in spaced parallel relation to the first mentioned passage way and opening into the chamber and a port connectin the two passage ways together, a valve stem slidably mounted in the second mentioned passage way extending beyond the forward end of the casing and into the chamber, a valve body on the inner end of said stem for normall closing communication between the chamber and the second mentioned passage way, and an angular lever pivoted to the forward end of the casing and straddling said nozzle and engaging the forward end of the stem for moving the stem inward and the valve body to an open position upon actuation of the lever in one direction.
2. A blow gun as defined in claim 1, and a wear and stop head on the forward end of the stem engaging the lever and for engagement with the forward end of the casing when the valve body is in its open position.
