Abstract
424,414. Treating gases with liquids. LEARMONTH, W., Norton Hall, The Green, Norton-on-Tees, and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Millbank, London. June 21, 1933, No. 17739. [Class 55 (ii)] Apparatus for treating gases with liquids such as scrubbers, absorption, de-aeration or distillation columns, comprises a tower of which the main body of packing consists of superposed tiers of thin strips of hard material, e.g. wood, metal, or synthetic resin, vertically arranged in contact with and transversely to those of adjacent tiers, liquid being delivered in film formation to the top tier. The packing elements are so dimensioned and arranged that the free space in the packing is not less than 70 per cent of the space occupied by the guidework, and the distance between individual elements which should not be more than treble their depth, does not exceed 2¢in. In the form shown, a scrubber has a lower packing 5 of deep strips, and a main packing 7 of metal laths 1 x 1/16in., spaced ¥in. apart with rope 20 or other soft material preventing byepassing of gas between the packing and the tower walls. Liquor is supplied by a tangential pipe 12 over a perforated plate 13 above a distributing gridwork 14 of square section elements, the liquor then falling through a free space 15 on inclined elements 15<a> each feeding a top element of the main packing 7. Baffles 3 assist the distribution of incoming gas over the whole area of the tower and corrugated plates 9 at the gas outlet 8 remove entrained liquor. Doors 17, 18, facilitate separate removal of the two banks of packing. Instead of separate inclined elements 15<a> bent-over parts of the top tier of packing may form oblique slats which obviate vertical passages through the packing. A number of towers may be arranged in two batteries with common gas inlet and outlet branches. A modified tower comprises a single body of packing irrigated by a bank of vertical plates each supplied with liquor by short pipes depending from tanks disposed on both sides of a gas outlet duct.
