Scrubbers and washers. - Gas is caused to ascend a tower while being subjected to alternate compression and expansion in the presence of liquid sprays, a series of banks of hurdles providing vertical passages in separate stages of successively diminishing aggregate cross sectional area. A washing tower 1 having a gas inlet 14 and outlet 4 is provided with a number of banks of hurdles composed of wooden or other slats set on edge and spaced apart in rows arranged consecutively at rightangles. The banks 15, 16, which constitute the first stage, may be composed of slots “in. wide, less than 4in. high, and spaced about 3in. apart to provide a gas passage of total area over four times the cross-sectional area of the wood in any row. A second bank 22 is made up of thicker slats preferably lin. wide and 2in. apart and the gas passage area may be twice that of the slats. Spray pipes 24 direct water, oil, &c. upwardly against the bottom row, or they may be dispensed with if the gas contains little dust. A third bank 25 is composed of slats which may be lin. wide, 2in. high, and 1“in. apart, the gas passage area being about the same as that of the slats. Spray pipes. 29 discharge downwardly upon the uppermost bank and additional upwardly discharging pipes 27 may be provided. A further series 28 may supply water to the top of the intermediate bank 22. A perforated cone 13 is located above the gas inlet to prevent splashing therein. A flush valve 7 and spray pipes 10 for stirring up accumulated sludge are provided at the base of the tower.
