[Class 28 (ii)] In a slicing-machine wherein the substance is slid intermittently over a support 11 towards the slicing plane, the friction is reduced by the provision of rollers 31 which lift the substance from the support during the feed movement. The rollers are mounted in arms 32 independently pivoted at 33, and springs 34, each connected to one arm, tend to raise the rollers above the level of the support and thus to lift the substance. The lifting action of the springs 34 is prevented by stronger compression springs 38 which are threaded on rods 36 guided in brackets 37, the rods 36 being joined by a cranked cross-bar 35 which bears on, and depresses, the arms 32. The substance holder is, as usual, reciprocated parallel to the slicing plane, and at the end of the return stroke, i.e. the feed portion of the stroke, when the substance-engager is aligned with the gauge plate the roller ends 41, 42 of the rods 36 ride up cams 43, 44, to lift the rods in opposition to the springs 38. The bar 35 is thus released from the arms 32, which rise to enable the rollers to lift the substance from the support 11. The cams 43, 44 are offset relatively to each other, so that the roller 41 does not foul the cam 44. The invention is described as applied to a " push-pull " machine. According to the Provisional Specification, a stationary camlike member may hold the rollers inoperative, or the rollers may be mounted on eccentrics on a rockshaft journalled below the substance support and turnable, when the feed movement is due, into a position in which the eccentrics hold the rollers above the surface of the substance support. The rollers or the eccentrics may have spring mountings and the rockshaft may be operated by a stationary cam engaging an arm or roller on the rock-shaft. There may be two or more series of lifting rollers arranged to lift the substance entirely clear of the substance support for the feed movement.
