Abstract

423,422. Knot-tying devices. ABBOTT MACHINE CO., Wilton, New Hampshire, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Abbott, E. J., and Ring, J. E.) July 30, 1934, No. 22202. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1933. [Class 112] A double-bill knot-tying device joins two strands by knotting each strand about one thickness of the other and pulling the knots thus formed together, Fig. 11. A single thickness of the strand A passes through the knot of strand B and itself forms a knot surrounding a single thickness of the strand B. The two strands are carried up in front of the device, Fig. 2, in notches 54, 55, 49, 49. A guide 48 attached to the frame 30 helps to guide the strands into the upper notches 49, 49. The strands then lie outside the pair of bills 34, 35. The notches 54, 55 guide the strands into pockets 58, 60 of two plate members 57, 59, Fig. 9. The plate 59 is pivoted to the gate 52 at 63 and the two plates are pivoted together at 64. The strand pockets are moved in timed relation with the tying bills to effect knotting by a toothed segment 25. The cam path 27 of the arcuate member 26 carrying the toothed segment 25 is such that during the first 180‹ of rotation of the bills 34, 35, the pockets 58, 60 move to carry each strand into position to be engaged by one of the fixed blades of the adjacent bill and also carries each strand into position to be engaged by the opposite bill outside the partial loop or bight formed by the other strand thereon. Further rotation of the bills permits the tail portions of the strands to slide out of the notches 49, 49 over the rounded shoulders of the bills till detained to overlie the two strands connecting the bills. The shear blades of the bills engage these tail portions to clamp and cut them. In this position, around bill 35 there is a loop of strand A grasped by the blades of the bill and having a strand B within it. The same is the case with bill 35, with the strand A in a loop of the strand B. The gate member 52 is then swung outwardly about its pivot 50 by a link 65 to strip the bills and form the knots, the gate being checked by a latch 71. At the end of the operation of the bill-operating shaft 31, the latch 71 is tripped by a pin 73 and a tongue thrusts the gate 52 further outwards to tighten the knots. A further slight rotation of the bills releases the tightened knots and a spring returns the operating trigger and the other parts to normal positions.
