Abstract

422,715. Packing arrangements for sliver cans. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P., Albert Foundry, Belfast. Aug. 10, 1933, No. 22324. [Class 120 (iii)] In a device for packing sliver into cans 2 and having a vertically reciprocating packing member 3, the position of which during its normal movements is directly determined by that of a power driven actuator, means are provided which come automatically into action to hold the packing member against downward movement when the normal relationship between the positions of the packing member and the actuator is altered. Sliver delivered by the rollers 1, Fig. 1, is packed into the continuously rotating can 2 by a packing member 3 carried by a horizontal arm 4 fixed to a rod 5 which is reciprocated vertically by means of a lever 9, 10 pivoted at 8 and oscillated by a cam 11. A collar 13 having an extension 18 embracing a guide 19 is fixed to the rod 5, a pawl 15 being pivoted thereto at 16. The forked end of the arm 9 is normally in contact with two rollers 17 on pawl 15, the rod 5 and packer 3 being moved upwards positively and falling by gravity but under control of the lever 9, 10 and cam 11. If the member 3 is held up, e.g. by striking the edge of a displaced can, while the arm 9 continues to move downwardly the pawl 15 swings about its pivot 16 and engages a rack 20, as shown dotted, Fig. 1, thus preventing a sudden descent of the packer 3 and rod 5 if subsequently released by the can swinging clear. The packing device may be held permanently out of action by the pawl 15 and rack 20 by being lifted by the usual mechanical means (not shown) to a point outside the range of the arm 9. In a modification the collar 13 is connected to the arm 9 by two pivoted links 21, 22, Fig. 3, the pawl 23 being fixed to the link 21 and pivoting about the same centre 24. During normal working the nose 21<a> engages the collar 13 and the pawl 23 is clear of the rack 20. If the packing member is stopped, the arm 9 continues to fall and the pawl 23 is swung into engagement with the rack 20. A sliding member spring pressed into engagement with the teeth may be used instead of a pawl while electromagnetic means might also be used. The cans 2 may also rotate alternately in opposite directions while a vertically reciprocated plunger might be used instead of the lever and cam 9, 10, 11. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement for facilitating removal of full cans from a drawing frame having four heads and having four operating cams 90‹ out of phase with each other.
