PROTECTOR MOTION FOR LOOMS Filed July 10 1955 u llllll] my Patented May 7, 1935 I r s fi l eqia a s. s k I Our invention relates to v:loonri protection fines Micarriedb'y the lay, fithis'rod being ntoimechanism and-dt is an object, @of .:the :s'ame to reduce to-a minimum the movement ofasuchpants :of known types of looms, as thetprotector irodeand @AIlOthEl'iObjBCt ofitheinvention isitoiproviden simple, i'cheap, efiective :mechanism of the icharqiiacteri'described, iwhich'shall operate with-la relatively vlittle use of power, and the use o'f which no :results in a saving in generalwvear and tear ;of the loom, =and particularly in 'suchxparts asshuttles, belts, :picker sticks, :pickerilug straps, :lugs'tick s, pick-bal1s,'-hangers,.etc.'

mounted for oscillation ina bearing 43. This Ishafti has a rock arm, 44 engaging the shuttle binder at the right hand end of the lay in the;
drawing (or its spring 20). Another arm 46 on shaft is connected by a link -41 to an arm 481 on shaft 21 and through this connection 'it will be seen that a'properly boxed shuttle'at the right hand side of the loom will act through the shaft 42 and link 41 to rock the shaft 21 to place its arm 29 out of the path of cam 30.
The operation of our device may be brieflyrestated as follows: v 7
During the normal operation of the loom when the shuttle enters the box adjacent the magazine side (at the left hand side of Fig. '1) it will act through the binder, binder spring and arm 28 to rock shaft 21 and move its arm 29 to a position where it will not strike the cam 30 as the lay beats up. Similarly, when the shuttle is properly boxed at the right hand orshipper han-' dle side of the 100m it acts through the binder and binder spring and rock arm 44 to oscillate the shaft 42, which through rock arm 46, link 41 and rock arm 48, swings the shaft- 21 against the tension of its spring 34 into inoperative position with reference to cam 30. Should the shuttle not be properly boxed at either end of its path-,the parts above referred to will not be moved, whereupon the arm 29 will ride up on cam 30, moving the shaft 21 axially upward and causing arm :1;0
lift the tail of the dagger, swinging it against the .tensionof springs 25 which normally holdit in idle position, into the operative position, where it engages frog 'II and stopsthe loom..
The invention is here illustrated 'in connection with a loom of theNorthrop type, but it 'willbe obvious that its application is not limited to looms of that type, and it will, also be obvious .that many changes may be'made by those skilled in the art from the device as herein shown and ,described, all without departing from the spirit of theinvention; therefore, we do not limit ourselves, except as indicated in the appended claims. While it is shown as a purely mechanical device it might obviously be operated electrically or otherwise. 1
1. In a loom having a lay, a shuttle binder thereon, a shuttle and-means. for stopping vthe loo-m, the combination of a dagger, means .for holding the dagger stationary in idle position .during the normal operation of the loom,- and means controlled by the binder for moving the dagger. into operative position for stopping the loom when'the shuttle is not'properly boxed, said means including a fixed cam on the 100m frame,
means normally positioned to be engaged by said' cam and to be actuated therebyfor moving the dagger into operative position as the lay beats up, and' means operated by a properly boxed shuttle'to disable said dagger-moving means.-
2. In a loom having a lay, a shuttle binder thereon, a shuttle and" means for stopping the loom, the combination of a pivoted dagger, means for holding the dagger stationary inidle position during the normal operation of the loom, and means controlled by. thebinder for moving the dagger into operative position for. stopping the loom when the shuttle is not properlyboxed, said means comprising :an-arm carried by the lay,
means forlifting said arm to swing the dagger into operative position, and means controlled. by
the binder for disabling said lifting means whenever'the shuttleis properly'boxed. j l 3. In a loom having a lay, a shuttle, binder shaft-moving means.
4. In a loom having a lay, a shuttle binder thereon, a shuttle and means for stopping the loom, the combination of a dagger, means for holding the dagger stationary in idle position during the normal operation of the'loom, and means'controlled by the binder for moving the dagger into operative position for stopping the loom when the shuttle is not properly boxed, said means comprising a shaft mounted for oscillatory and axialmovement, an arm on the shaft below the adjacent end of the dagger, a cam fixed on theframe of the loom, an arm on the shaft for engaging said cam to move the shaft axially and so bring the dagger into operative position when the shuttle is not properly boxed, and means actuated by a properly boxed shuttle for oscillating said shaft to move the second-named arm out of position for engaging said cam.
5. A device as in claim 3, including resilient means for holding said second arm in position to engage said cam.
6. 'In a. loom attachment, a protector rod, a dagger thereon, resilient means for holding the dagger in idle position, means mounted on the .laybutindependentlyof the dagger for moving the dagger toward active position upon the beatup of the-lay, a shuttle feeler, and means actuated through said shuttlefeeler by a properly boxed shuttle for disabling said dagger moving means.
'7. Ina loom attachment, a protector rod, a
dagger thereon, means for normally holding the dagger stationarycin idle position during operation of a loom to which it is attached, a vertically -movab le member, means including a cam adapted to be fixed to a loom frame for actuating said vertically movable member to move the dagger into operative position, a' shuttle feeler, and connections from said shuttle feeler to said vertically movable member for preventing operation thereof if the shuttle is properly boxed.
-8 A device as, in claim '1, including a fixed .bearingon the lay for said vertically movable member.--
