Abstract
Solid castings of iron, containing 1,5-4 per cent of carbon, are rolled or forged at above 1200 DEG F., preferably at 1600-2000 DEG F., and then malleabilized. The iron should contain 0,45-1,75 per cent of silicon and under 1 per cent of manganese, 0,225 per cent of phosphorus and 0,05 per cent of sulphur, and may contain up to 1 per cent of molybdenum or 0,6 p per cent of copper. The cast billet or slab is cooled rapidly and reheated, or is soaked at rolling temperature and then rolled without reheating. The sheet or strip is then kept at a temperature of 1250-1600 DEG F. for about 100 hours or less for alloy iron. The material may then be cold rolled, annealed at above 1200 DEG F., and stamped to form various articles or formed into electrically welded tubes, slitting first if necessary. The material may also be tinned, galvanized, or nitrogenized.
