Abstract

Malleabilized castings of iron, containing 1,5-4 per cent of carbon, are rolled into sheet form at a temperature between 1000 and 2000 DEG F. White cast iron, which may contain 1,5-4 per cent of carbon, 0,45-1,75 of silicon, under 1 per cent of manganese, under 0,225 and preferably under 0,05 per cent of phosphorus, and under 0,05 per cent of sulphur, is cast into a slab or other form suitable for rolling. Up to 1 per cent of molybdenum or 0,6 per cent of copper may also be added. The casting is then malleabilized by heating to 1250-1600 DEG F., preferably 1500-1550 DEG F., for about 100 hours, or less if molybdenum is present. The slab is then rolled at 1000-2000 DEG F., preferably under 1600 DEG F., cold rolled, and annealed at over 1200 DEG F. The sheet may be stamped &c. to form various articles and tinned, galvanised or nitrogenized. Rolled or sheared strips may be bent into tubes hot and welded and if desired annealed.
