Abstract

<PICT:0422082/IV/1> A winch for dye cisterns and the like has a barrel provided with narrow longitudinal ridges between which are wide shallow cavities. The material in passing over the barrel partially sags into the cavities causing a momentary lessening of air pressure on the underside of the material. Transverse ridges may also be provided. As shown, a winch 1, either hollow and of stainless steel, or solid and of wood, is provided with ridges 2 which form recesses 3. Where the winch is hollow, the sheet metal, jointed at 7, is disposed on bars 6. The cavities may be further divided by ribs transverse to the ridges 2. The fabric may be guided to prevent lateral movement between clips on rods 10 disposed in the cavities 3. In operation, a partial vacuum is created in the cavities which further aids the grip on the material. The cavities also form temporary reservoirs for moisture from the material. The cistern 22 comprises a wooden frame with a stainless steel lining 24 and a perforated screen 25 through which the dye circulates under the influence of a heating element in chamber 27.
