[Class 38 (ii)] In grid-regulated mercury-arc rectifiers, the A.C. voltage applied to the grids is of harmonic frequency with respect to the anode voltage and is composed of two or more harmonics which may be separately or jointly varied in phase or magnitude to effect regulation. A voltage of the same frequency as the anode voltage, or a D.C. voltage may be superposed on the harmonic voltage. The harmonic voltage may be derived by full-wave rectification of current of the same frequency as the anode voltage, the resultant current of the form shown in Fig. 2 being fed through a resistance R1, Fig. 3, in circuit with a resistance R2 and D.C. source E1, thus producing a voltage wave of the form shown in Fig. 4 across the resistance R2. The positive peaks of the latter (which occur at twice the frequency of the anode voltage) may be used to control starting of current in pairs of anodes of opposite phase either by application to a pair of connected grids or to a single grid associated with the two anodes.
