Abstract

421,085. Walls; slabs. McGOWAN, C. W. N., and FURNEAUX, F. H. C., 17, North John Street, Liverpool. Jan. 18, 1934, No. 33877 /33. [Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i)] Walls are constructed from precast concrete slabs which are connected by grouting metal members 5, 5a in grooves 2, 3 provided in the vertical and horizontal edges of the slabs, the grooves 3 in the horizontal edges of the slabs extending for a part only of the length of the slabs as shown in Fig. 1. The members 5, which may be of H-cross-section, round metal rods, or a number of rods braced by wires, are embedded in apertures 7 formed in a concrete or brickwork base wall 6, and such members 5 may be anchored in the apertures 7 by means of bitumen. The members 5 are adapted to extend only a comparatively short distance into the vertical slots of the slabs in the second course, and the spaces above such members are filled with grout. Channel members 10 are employed as shown in Fig. 9 to hold adjacent slabs in alignment until the grouting in the joints has set, and such channels have apertures 11 to permit grout to be poured into the grooves 2. After removal of these channels 10, U-shaped yokes 12, Fig. 2, are set into holes in the top edges of adjacent slabs. At corners, the yokes may be of angle form as shown at 12<a>, Fig. 5, with or without an additional central depending pin 12<b>. Party walls may consist of two opposed sets of hollowed slabs 13, Fig. 4, with recesses 2 to co-operate with the end slots 2 in the slabs 1 of the main wall, and a yoke 12 is employed as shown. The main portion of the slabs may consist of concrete with two reinforcing layers of wire mesh fabric. A thin facing layer of fine concrete may be provided on each slab.
