[Classes 40 (iii) and 40 (v)] A correct mean brightness of a reproduced picture, relative to the brightest and darkest tones is maintained automatically. The mean brightness of a light source or relay 11 is regulated by automatically regulating the grid bias of the valve 10 feeding the source by a voltage derived from a previous valve 4 amplifying the received signals. The output of this valve passes through a rectifier 14 to develop a potential on the grid of an extra valve 19 and thus vary its anode current. The anode circuit contains a resistance 21 which also lies in the grid circuit of the valve 10. The rectifier is associated with a leaky condenser 18, 17 with a time constant such that variations in the mean value of the signal are not operative until they have lasted for a small plurality of pictures.
