[Class 117.] In apparatus for purifying middlings and other granular materials such as ores, minerals, &c., of the type comprising a reciprocating sieve 6, through which a current of air is drawn upwardly to carry off the light ingredients, a shield 15 is disposed over and substantially parallel to the sieve so as to deflect the air current in a forward longitudinal direction, and means, such as an adjustably inclined baffle 30, are provided for deflecting the air upwardly at the end of the sieve into an expansion chamber 27 in which the materials carried by the air current are deposited. The shield, which preferably terminates short of the end of the sieve, makes air-tight contact with the sides of the casing, and may be supported at one end on a spring or hinged strip 16 and at the other end by a vertically adjustable bracket 18. A further baffle plate 33 may be disposed over the end of the sieve and shoots 14, 37 are provided for discharging respectively the materials leaving the end of the sieve and deposited in the chamber 27. The exhaust air outlet 22 is arranged at the top of a further expansion chamber 21, the bottom of which may be formed by the upper side of the shield, and deposited material is discharged into the chamber 27 by travelling brushes and scrapers 36. Inspection windows 4, 5, 31 are provided in the sides of the casing.
