Abstract

419,719. Controlling change-speed gearing. JONES & LAMSON MACHINE CO., Springfield, Vermont, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Flanders, R. E.; Springfield, Vermont, U.S.A.) May 31, 1934, No. 16302. Convention date, June 15, 1933. [Class 80 (ii).] Change - speed gearing suitable for driving lathes comprises three shift levers &c. 30, 37, 41, Fig. 1, which are moved simultaneously to proper gear positions by three preselective profile members 80, 81, 82, Fig. 4. The outer levers 30, 41 have two gear positions each, and the inner lever 37 three gear positions, so that the combination yields twelve forward speeds which are selected by turning a hand lever 92, Fig. 8, over a dial 101. The levers 30, 37, 41 are jointed to rockers 50, 51, 52, Fig. 4, which rock on pivots carried transversely on shafts 83, 85, 83<1> in front of the profile selectors 80, 81, 82 which are connected by a flange 115 so as to slide together and by a toothed train 110, 111, 112 so as to turn together. The selector 81 is fast to its shaft 85. The selectors have outwardlydirected segmental profile faces 125 as shown in Figs. 9, 10 and 11. The shaped face of each selector is adapted to coact with a pair of fork arms 126 of the rocker opposite so that in a gear position such as is shown in Fig. 1, the three rockers 50, 51, 52 are held locked so that the levers 30, 37, 41 and the slidable toothed gear clusters are also so held. To change speed, the lever 92 is pulled outwards of Fig. 8 from the dial 101 about a lower fixed pivot 91. This brings the coupled selectors to the position of Fig. 4 clear of the fork arms 126. The lever 92 is then turned sideways of Fig. 8 about the central pivot shaft 85, with which there is a cross pivotal connection 95, and stopped opposite, say, number 57 on the dial 101 which indicates the speed to be imparted to the lathe &c. spindle 5. A blank indication on the right of the dial corresponds to neutral with a stopped driven shaft 5. The segmental faces 125 are now set in different combinations so that the required speed combination is brought into effective locked engagement when the lever 92 is turned back towards the right of Fig. 1 about the pivot 91.
