429,741. Controlling change speed gearing. HERBERT, SIR A., LLOYD, A. H., and HARRISON, H. T., c/o Herbert, Ltd., Canal Road, Edgwick, Coventry. Dec. 14, 1934, No. 35908. [Class 80 (ii)] Selector mechanism for controlling changespeed gearing for lathes and other machine tools comprises the twin rotary and contracting profile discs 40 described in Specification 382,784, but adapted for operating sliding gears instead of friction clutches. A driving- shaft 12 is adapted to be connected by a disc clutch 13 to a shaft 17 which drives on through a reversing-gear in series with three twospeed gears with sliding toothed change wheels. These three two-speed gears in series are controlled respectively by three stems 39, and eight forward speeds are effected by closing in on these stems the present profile discs 40. In a preselector arrangement shown, the discs 40 are held apart from the stems 39 while the gearing is in motion and are present from a turnable dial 50. A cam barrel 51 is then turned one revolution from a handwheel. A control collar 15 is first slid by a cam 53 against a disc brake 16 to arrest the transmission. A cam 52 then operates twin levers 43 in unison to throw towards each other collars 41 which press against the backs of the profile discs 40 through springs 42. The stems 39 are thus operated yieldingly towards the selected serial combination, and the gear teeth to be enmeshed have sharpened ends to facilitate change of mesh. The cam 53 then by moving the collar 15 engages the clutch 13 and the drive proceeds on the new ratio. The cam 52 then separates the twin collars 41 and discs 40. In a modified preselector arrangement, the cam barrel 51 is replaced by a trip lever. In another arrangement, the profile discs 40 are not withdrawn after closing in on the stems 39. This arrangement is not preselective since selection cannot be effected until the discs have been separated for the purpose. The profile discs may be contracted by suitable power means.
