Abstract

419,691. Speedometers. ETABLISSEMENTS E. JAEGER, 2, Rue Baudin, Levallois- Perret, Seine, France. Dec. 11, 1933, No. 34837. Convention date, Dec. 14, 1932. [Class 106 (iii).] In apparatus as described in Specification 220,601, [Class 106 (iii)], in which the average speed during a time interval is measured directly, an independent source of power, such as an electric motor, drives both the distance and time elements, while the distance element is synchronized with the shaft, the speed of which is required by remote electric control. In the earlier Specification, a shaft 7 rotated in accordance with distance from the shaft 1, drives a toothed wheel 7<11> by a pinion 8 during a given time interval, and thus rotates a wheel 7<111> against a spring 34, the wheel 7<111> actuating an indicator, not shown. At the end of the time interval, a cam 5 rocks the shaft 7 and disconnects the gears 8, 711, the wheels 7<11>, 7<111> being retained by spring pawls 30, 31 until release by cams 32, 33. The cams are carried on a shaft 6 rotated by gearing including a slipping member from the shaft 1, the speed being controlled by an escapement 21, 18. The cam 5 on shaft 6 engages and disengages the gears 8, 7<11> by means of the rocking lever 41. According to the invention, the shaft 1 is driven by an independent motor which drives both the distance and time shafts 7, 6, the distance shaft 7 being synchronized with the shaft, not shown, the speed of which is required. The shaft 7 is driven from the toothed wheel 3 through a light friction clutch 7<1>, the escapement wheel 4, a spring 9 and flywheel 10. The speed of the escapement wheel 4 is regulated by a rocking element 11 actuated by electromagnets 12, 13, Fig. 2, energized by intermittent currents supplied from an interrupter, not shown, on the shaft whose speed is required. Slipping of the clutch 7<1> allows this synchronization. Alternatively, the shaft 7 may be actuated by a small synchronous motor supplied with current from an alternator.
