Abstract

419,618. Road surface heaters. GENERAL ASPHALTE CO., Ltd., Australia House, Strand, and LUKE, F. A. B., 35, Lichfield Way, Hampstead, both in London. June 21, 1933, No. 17614. [Class 107.] A road-surface heating device comprises electrical heating elements which are disposed beneath a hood provided with heat-insulating lagging and mounted upon a verticallyadjustable supporting frame. In the construction shown, the frame consists of ends 11, 11<1>, interconnected by bars 16, and adjustably mounted by bosses 15 upon vertical rods 14 extending from the supporting castors or the like 13. The heating elements are arranged within the hood 10 supported by the end frames, and consist of a number of sections which, by means of a switch gear 19, may be linked up in any convenient arrangement of series and parallel connections. The heatinsulating lagging is disposed between the heating elements and the hood and may consist of asbestos, vulcanized fibre, or phenol condensation products. The lagging may extend also around the sides of the hood and form an enclosing apron or envelope 18 adapted to extend close to the surface to be heated. In a modification, a metal plate or a like heatabsorbing body is arranged beneath the heating elements. Instead of resistance heating- elements, electric arcs between carbon or metal electrodes may be used. Means may be provided for indicating the temperature beneath the hood, or of the asphalt surface.
