Abstract
419,178. Copying -mechanism. AKT.- GES. F. STUDER, Glockenthal-Thun, Switzerland. Jan. 15, 1934, No. 1433. Convention date, Jan. 19, 1933. [Class 83 (iii).] In a method of copying from a pattern the movements of the tracer, which can swing about its tracing point, are transmitted to a tool, such as a grinding wheel or milling cutter, having a profile corresponding to the profile of the tracer point and swingable about its working edge in unison with the swinging movements of the tracer. A vertically-movable table 2 carries a transverse slide 3 and a longitudinal slide 4. The latter slide carries a plate 5 on which is pivoted on a horizontal axis 5b a work table 5a. For operating on rotary work the plate 5 may be removed and head and tail stocks may be mounted on the slide 4. The bed 1 also carries a support 7 carrying the pattern table 8 and a suspension arm 10 for a pantograph 13, Fig. 5. The arm 10 carries a guide 14b for the pantograph arm 13b<1> which is jointed to the arm 13a carrying an adjustable guide 14a secured on a pivot pin 22 carried by a linkage 17, 17a connected to the frame 1 and carrying the grinding head 15. The limb 13d carries a support 12 for the angularly movable tracer pin 11, the point of the tracer lying on the axis of movement. The pivot of the support 12 and the pins 10b and 22 are collinear and the parts are adjustable to vary the scale of reproduction. The pivotal axis of the grinding-head is tangential to the periphery of the grinding - wheel 16. A parallelogram linkage 19 with joints 20 of ring form connects the tracer to the grinding-wheel carrier so that the swinging movements of the tracer are transmitted to the grinding-wheel. In order to make the grinding-wheel profile similar to that of the tracer point, the latter is moved into various angular positions, Fig. 9, while engaging a straight edge 36, the wheel being correspondingly moved against a diamond tool 37 located in the axis of the grinding-head. In copying flat work-pieces the tracer 11 is moved over the pattern 9 at any convenient angle while the wheel shapes the work 6. For making formed turning-tools the work and pattern are both arranged in a tilted position, Fig. 6, so that the desired cutting angle is produced. Turning tools of the gapped disc type may also be produced. If the periphery of the pattern is only partly within range of the tracer the work and templet may be rotatable about their axes and the copying performed in stages. In place of a pattern a finished work piece mounted between centres on the pattern table may be employed.
