Abstract

419,174. Kettles. CORNING GLASS WORKS, Walnut Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Leibig, E. C. ; 187, East 2nd Street, Corning, New York, U.S.A.) Jan. 1, 1934, No. 65. Convention date, Jan. 6, 1933. Drawings to Specification. [Class 125 (i).] A reagent bottle made of chemically and thermally resistant glass, is provided with a design or label composed of a coloured area and an uncoloured area, one area being raised with respect to the other. The coloured area consists of a thin surface layer which contains a small amount of copper or silver, or both, and has an expansion coefficient which is not higher than the uncoloured portion of the glass. The coloured area is produced by staining the glass, a suitable stain being composed of a mixture of silver sulphide, yellow ochre, and copper sulphide. The mixture is made into a slip with water and is sprayed on to the glass, which is heated to about 150‹ C., a stencil of thin metal being placed on the glass to delimit the stained area. The bottle is then heated to about 675‹ C. to cause the stain to colour a very thin surface layer of the glass. It is then annealed, and the residual colouring mixture wiped off with steel wool. A design is then formed in the stained area either by sandblasting or by engraving or etching in the usual way so as to leave a coloured design in relief on a matte or clear background.
