Abstract

418,676. Sweeping lawns &c. BARTTER, S. H., 8, St. James' Road, Kingston-on-Thames. April 26, 1933, No. 12145. [Class 6 (ii).] A machine for sweeping lawns and other ground surfaces comprises a main frame supported on four wheels well above the ground surface, a brush rotatably and adjustably mounted in the frame, means on two oppositelydisposed wheels adapted to engage with means on the opposite ends of the brush shaft for rotating the brush, a refuse-retaining box removably attached to each end of the main frame and means for propelling the machine over the surface to be cleaned. In the construction shown, a frame comprising side members 1, 2 spaced apart by tie rods is provided with wheels 7, 8, two of which carry spur wheels 9 meshing with pinions 10. Each pinion is mounted on a spindle 11 provided with a cupshaped member which has a T-shaped slot for engagement by a pin 21 on the end of a brush shaft 13. Each spindle 11 is mounted in a bearing provided on one end of a quadrant 14<x> which is formed with a slot 15 and on each face with serrations. The serrations on the inner face are adapted to engage serrations formed on the side member which, as shown in Fig. 4, is formed with an arcuate channel 18 terminating in a slot 19 adapted to receive the bearing for the spindle 11. The quadrants 14<x> are each maintained in place by a stud 20 passing through the slot 15 and screwed into a boss 20<x> provided on the side member. A dustpan 26 is removably attached at each end of the sweeper frame, being held at the top by means of a spring- tensioned hook 31 and at the bottom having a delivery plate 27 which is bent to rest on a tie rod 3. In a modification, the sweeper has at each side an auxiliary brush for sweeping path edges, &c. According to the Provisional Specification, the brush may be driven by friction from the ground wheels or by means of cogs, cogs and chains, or a driving shaft, and propelled by hand or mechanical means.
